Elegant Figures play Backgammon in an Interior
47 × 64 cm
Oil on canvas
Antwerp painter Christoffel van der Lamen went to Amsterdam in 1620, probably for a training period. He did not return to Antwerp until 1634, where he became a teacher in the Guild of San Luca in 1636/37. He painted elegant societies in the interiors, conceptually based on the paintings of Anthonie Palamedesz. (1602-1673).
In an indoor place we see two young women with three men playing and talking. All people are elegantly dressed in the fashion of the time. A painting with a view of an estuary hangs on the back wall of the room. There are two playing cards on the floor and a wine jug on the left.
