St. Antony Abbot of the Desert
Oil on canvas
88 × 69 cm
Kneeling on the ground next to a crucifix, Saint Anthony is portrayed intent on reading the Holy Scriptures. His animated expression and excited hand position show his pious zeal. He retired to the desert to lead an ascetic life there. The red "T" stick on his cloak is his attribute. The pig is a reminder of the Antonites' privilege of letting their pigs run free in exchange for caring for those who fell ill due to Antony's fire. The colouring breathes the spirit of Rococo.
