St. Elisabeth of Hungary (of Thuringia) distributes Alms to the Poor
Oil on canvas
97 × 52 cm
St. Elizabeth, daughter of the King of Hungary, accompanied by her entourage, distributes alms to the poor in front of her palace. Angels and cherubs float in the air. A putto holds a crown in his hand, while another putto pours money from the cornucopia. These refer to the real origin and generosity of Elizabeth. The image is closely related to an altarpiece by Daniel Gran in the Karlskirche in Vienna, made in 1736/37, although some minor characters do not match. These are the posture of the child in the foreground and the three figures on the left in the background. In the completed painting, only two are seen. In the final version, the bottom vase at the entrance to the building is missing. This oil sketch probably shows an earlier design phase.
