BARTHOLOMEUS VAN DER HELST About 1613 Haarlem - Before 16 December 1670 Amsterdam PORTRAIT OF A SEATED YOUNG MAN IN A BLACK ROBE, ABOUT 1660 Oil on canvas (relined). 123 x 96 cm (F. 132 x 105 cm). Part. min. old restored. Frame. Attached expert opinion by Dr. Walther Bernt dated 24 May 1952: Bernt writes: 'The oil painting on canvas .... Portrait of a gentleman, three-quarter figure, sitting in a red-covered chair to the right, looking towards the viewer, a letter in the left hand, the right hand with a speaking gesture, long brunette curled hair, black robe, in the background a gathered curtain with a coat of arms in the upper left corner - is an impeccable, characteristic and very well preserved work by the Amsterdam portrait painter Bartholomeus van der Helst 1613-1670 from the time around 1660. A whole series of identical portraits of the same size is known. Maybe the present painting is identical with the portrait of a gentleman of the same size in the auction Rochehousseau in Paris on 5.5.1873, No 85, which is listed in the oeuvre of J.J. de Gelder, B. van der Helst (1921) under No 396'.
