A LACQUERED AND GILT WOOD SEATED BUDDHA
Burma, Shan style, 19th-20th century
The figure sitting cross-legged on a pedestal with a shaped section, the right arm extended along the side with the fingers pointing downwards in the gesture of "touching the earth" (bhumisparsamudra), the left arm bent at the elbow and the hand placed in the lap with the open palm facing up (originally probably holding a container, a typical attribute of the so-called Medicine Buddha), the robe decorated in relief with floral motifs, the head surmounted by an exuberant crown with lanceolate and flaming motifs.
