Hokusai Katsushika (1760-1849) after. Mount Fuji seen through the pines of Hodogaya on the road to Tôkaidô, Japan. Print from the series of "36 views of Fuji" - Fugaku sanjûrokkei. Size of the sheet : 19 x 26,7 cm
In this print, Hokusai represents Mount Fuji behind a row of pine trees which seem to separate the world of humans from that of the gods. Indeed, the foreground of the scene describes the world of travelers on a country road. Some are resting for a moment, others have just put down a sedan chair where a woman is dozing. To the right of the composition, a groom facing the sacred mountain is guiding a pack horse. A beggar monk, recognizable by his clothes, his straw hat and the bamboo flute accompanying him, walks away to the right. In the background of the print, Mount Fuji, standing in the distance, seems to invite a certain spirituality.
