MARAT (Jean-Paul). Physical researches on fire. Paris, Jombert fils, 1780. 8 pages, marbled calf, cold fillet, ornamented spine, red title page, red edges (period binding).
First edition, decorated with 7 folding plates engraved on copper by Madame Ponce.
The last leaf contains the famous privilege dated April 1780, addressed to our beloved Sieur Marat [sic]: it is known that Lavoisier, after an erroneous announcement in the Journal de Paris (June 9, 1780) indicating that the Academy of Sciences had approved the work, intervened the next day to denounce this information, specifying, not without disdain, that the Academy had refused to give Marat its approval.
Minor spotting, one spine cracked.
Bound in the following:
- VOLTA (Alexander). Letters on the inflammable air of the marshes. Strasbourg, From the Printing House of J. H. Heitz, 1778.
First French edition, with a folding plate.
- [BERNSTORFF]. The Economy of Nature. Amsterdam, Et se trouve à Paris, Didot le jeune, Durand, Mérigot jeune, 1783.
One folding plate. The text is incomplete on pages 181-186, containing a passage that was suppressed by the Censor as indicated by a handwritten note of the time.
