Partly first edition. Some of the letters and various of these famous literary opuscules appear here for the first time. Copy as issued, bound and untrimmed in printed cover. Faint wetness affecting the last 10 leaves of volume I. Small reinforcement of thin japanese paper on the back of volume II. Attached : a L.A.S. from Courier, dated April 16, 1794 from the camp of Blies-Castel (one and a half page in-8). In the spring of this year 1794, Courier left the garrison of Thionville to be employed in the army of Moselle, which he joined at the camp of Blies-Castel. It was then that for the first time he saw war and learned to sleep in the bivouac next to his cannons (Mémoires, t. I, p. 19).
