COURIER (Paul-Louis). Petition for villagers who are prevented from dancing. Paris, Chez les Marchands de nouveautés, 1822. Booklet in-8 of 28 pages, disjointed.
In French in the text, n°233.
First edition of the author's most famous pamphlet.
The petition aimed at cancelling a prefectural decree issued at the request of a young, zealous parish priest, which forbade villagers to dance on Sundays in the square of Azai: Courier goes beyond the rural framework of a simple village chronicle - admirably evoked - to denounce the intrusion of the Church and the government into the private life of each individual (Paul-Louis Courier, cat. BnF, 1972, n°250).
