SOUMAK carpet (Caucasus), late 19th century Dimensions : 325 x 148cm. Technical characteristics : Wool velvet on wool foundation. A brick field with flowers, diamonds, stars and symbolic interlacing, supports three large diamond-shaped medallions composed of different layers of crocheted highlights in pastel colours. The hearts are decorated with entomological forms and a tree of life. They are surrounded by jagged broken lines, ivory and pistachio, decorated with stylized trees, flowers, "Zigzags" and crocheted lines, symbol of the "dragon". The midnight blue border is decorated with small flowered boxes. The two reserves at each end are with polychrome stars of the Medes and with "dogs running". Nice ethnic set.
