DORÉ (Gustave). The Parisian Menagerie. [Paris], Au bureau du Journal amusant, journal pour rire (lith. Vayron), [1854].
24 lithographs, in COLOUR (26,3 x 33,3 cm) signed in stone, titled and numbered (some very slight foxing). In-4 bradel green half-percaline, marbled paper covers.
Humorous suite of characters whose function evokes animals and in which one finds people of the people, people of the world or of the Stock Exchange: women and men are called "lions" and "lionesses" (without forgetting the "silly lions"!), one meets there "rats" of opera or sewer, "wolves" at the masked ball, "vultures" without heart in the money trades, slandering "snakes", etc. (Leblanc pp. 237-238.)
One of the rare copies in color.
