Germany - BARRE (Joseph). General history of Germany. Paris, Delespine & Hérissant, 1748.
10 volumes in 11 strong vol. in-4, with engraved headpieces at the beginning of each part, 2 frontispieces (including a portrait of Frederic-Augustus III of Saxony, by Daullé after Silvestre) and a large folded map with coloured outlines, half blond calf, spine with false nerves, gilt scrolls, aubergine morocco title-pieces and gilt gilt gilded headpieces and headpieces (binding circa 1820). Several small spots of wear and tear. Armorial bookplate with the motto Faire et Taire of the Renouard de Bussieres family (Alsace). A good copy.
Unique edition of this monumental history of the Germanic corps, which earned its author a not always appropriate fame (Voltaire reproached him for having inserted 200 pages of his Histoire de Charles XII, without indicating their provenance). Canon Joseph Barré (1692-1764) taught theology at Sainte-Geneviève, and was appointed Chancellor of the University of Paris in 1744.
