With 4 engr. titles and 120 copper plates. 4 parts in 2 vols. - First edition of the splendid illustrated history of the Christian missions. The impressive plates show scenes of the mission in foreign countries (Japan, China, Brazil, Florida, Turkey, Russia among many others), how the Catholic faith was enforced with torture methods, sword and whip, or how it took possession of the converts in poignant offerings of exotic figures to the cross. Also represented are dramatic martyrdoms, councils and assemblies as well as numerous missionaries in large-format portraits. - The Jesuit Corneille Harzart distinguished himself in the order as one of the most zealous advocates of the faith, who promoted the missionary work and fought the battle against the Haretics with his pen. - Contemporary calf with blindtooling on the boards (rubbed and slightly scraped, spine edges with tears, joints of vol. 2 cracking). - With few handwritten notes. In some places faintly waterstained, occasionally brown- or fingerstained. Endpapers and firts 3 leaves of vol. 1 with glue traces. In isolated places with marginal tears.
