Michel Potage (1949-2020) delivers a painting that is as expressive as it is confidential, with an accurate and poetic line. Fleeing the capital for a small village in the Sarthe, he drew from this bucolic setting a new relationship to color illustrated by his "green period" of Greenyard Pieces. From Tôles (Festival d'Avignon, 1974) to Sols (Centre National d'Art Contemporain, 1984), Michel Potage was represented by the Parisian galleries Thierry Spira and Henry Bussière. Several works are now in public collections, at the Fonds Municipal d'Art Contemporain de Paris and at the Augusta Cotton Museum in Georgia, USA.
Tree (1995) illustrates all the poetry of Michel Potage's work: in a monumental format, this canvas mixes oil paint and plaster to play with the pictorial touch. The brush strokes, furtive and simply sketched, place this modern work between abstraction and figuration.
