ROMAN RING SET WITH AN INTAGLIO. APOLLON. Eastern Roman art, 2nd - 3rd century Burnt carnelian intaglio ; 11 x 13,4 mm 24 cts gold setting ; diam (int) 17,4 mm TD_54 ; 9 grs Provenance Paris, private collection A portrait with youthful features in profile and turned to the left. The hair is wearing a diadem. The face is characterized by a large almond-shaped eye, a marked pupil, a short and straight nose and a small fleshy mouth. The hair is represented in thick strands of hair, protruding behind the tiara and reaching to the base of the neck. This may be a representation of the god Apollo. The ring is rounded on the outside and on the inside, the wider shoulders ending in a central oval bezel set with the intaglio. AN EASTERN ROMAN GOLD RING SET WITH A BURNT CARNELIAN INTAGLIO. APOLLO 02/5 x 01/2 in. Intaglio. Figuring a portrait with juvenile features in profile and turned to the left. The hair is adorned with a tiara. The face is characterized by a large almond-shaped eye with a marked pupil, a short, straight nose and a small fleshy mouth. The hair is shown in thick strands, extending beyond the back of the tiara and reaching down to the base of the neck. It may be a representation of the god Apollo.
