BELL-SHAPED CRATER Etruria, early 4th century BC Black glazed terracotta. Restorations. Height_ 31,5 cm ; Diam_ 36 cm Provenance: Monte-Carlo, private collection of Mr. B.C. A MAGNA-GRAECIA RED-FIGURED BELL KRATER, 4TH CENTURY B.C. 12,4 in. High ; 14 in Diameter. Decor: Young man represented naked, seated in profile to the right. He holds a bird (dove?) in his left hand. In front of him, a youg woman standing in profile to the left and richly draped with chiton tightened at the waist. Wearing a low bun and covered with a veil falling over her shoulders and held in her left hand. With her right hand she holds out a laurel wreath towards the young man. In the field on the right, ionic column.on the other side, two male figures. This scene appears to represent the euandria; popular male beauty pageant in Ancient Greece. At the neck: A laurel frieze. Decor: Young man represented naked, sitting in profile to the right. He holds in his right hand a bird (dove?). In front of him of him stands in profile to the left a young woman richly draped with a chiton tightened at the waist. Her hair is in a covered with a veil falling on her shoulders and held with her left hand. With her right hand she holds out a laurel wreath to the young man a laurel wreath. In the field on the right, an Ionic column. On the other side, two male figures. This scene seems to represent the euandria, a male beauty contest very popular in prized in ancient Greece. At the neck : A frieze of laurels in red reserve Handles : around the handles in red reserve and black paint, frieze of tears. Under the decoration: frieze of Greek of black painting on reserve of red.
