RARE SEAL-SCARABOID Egypt, late New Kingdom - Late Period Soapstone Dim_ 11 x 16 x 5 mm Provenance Former Rupert Wace collection, Faustus Gallery, acquired circa 1980 French private collection A RARE EGYPTIAN STEATITE SCARABOID SEAL, LATE NEW-KINGDOM - LATE PERIOD 0,4 x 0,6 x 0,2 in. The back engraved in relief with the inscription Ḏḥwty nb ḫmnw - Djehouty, Lord of Khemenu. The reverse engraved with the inscription Jw-ib-nb-nṯr.w - Blessed the heart of the Lord of the gods. Djehuty is the Egyptian name of the god Thoth meaning "He who is like the ibis". This sacred bird in ancient Egypt and associated with wisdom. Another form of his name is also present here, it is the formula Lord of Khemenu (capital of the XVth nome of Upper Egypt known later as Hermopolis), which was one of the major centers of the cult of Thoth . In the afterlife his role is associated with Osiris and Anubis, as he keeps the accounts of the fate of the souls of the deceased and compiles the sentences during the weighing of the heart.
