Beniezsky, circa 1816-1820. FRANCOIS I, EMPEROR OF AUSTRIA Depicted in miniature and in bust and uniform from three quarters to the left, adorned in particular with the Golden Fleece, the Order of Leopold and the Order of the Iron Crown, created in Italy by Napoleon I and re-established by Francis I in 1816 to reward the civil and military merits of the nobility FRANCOIS I (1768-1835), EMPEROR OF AUSTRIA, PAINTED ON IVORY, CIRCA 1816-1820. PORTRAIT MINIATURE FROM THE COLLECTION OF THE LATE KING UMBERTO II OF ITALY. Gouache on ivory H. 5 cm; W. 4.2 cm Signed on the right :L. Beniezsky Gilt brass and varnished wood frame. Provenance: -collection of the late King Umberto II of Italy (1904-1983). -delegated by the sovereign to a member of his family. The National Museum in Stockholm has a miniature identical to ours, representing Francis I of Austria and signed by the same artist and in every respect. L. Beniezskyis, according to the national museum of Stockholm, a Hungarian painter active from 1800 and after. Francis I of Austria (1768-1835)Archduke of Austria (1792-1804) and later Emperor of Austria (1804-1835), King of Hungary (1792-1835), King of Bohemia (1792-1835) and King of Lombardy-Venetia (1815-1835), was also the last ruler of the Holy Roman Empire (1792-1806), under the name of Francis II. Nephew of Queen Marie Antoinette, he was the son of Leopold of Habsburg-Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and Marie-Louise of Bourbon (1745-1792), Infanta of Spain and daughter of King Charles III. Francis I married four times and had thirteen children.
