Rodolphe Bresdin (1822-1885 )Peasant interior. About 1855-1858. Pen and ink drawing with wash on bristol board [161 x 116]. On the reverse, pencil mark (C. de Woznicki, Lugt not described). Drawing to be compared with the etchings Flemish Interior of 1856 (Van Gelder 86), Interior of Peasants of the Haute-Garonne of 1858 (Van Gelder 92) or Moldavian Interior of 1859 (Van Gelder 93). "... there is something touching in imagining the starving artist, imposing on himself the torture of Tantalus, drawing or engraving with meticulous delight interiors overloaded with everything he could dream of for himself and his family: the warmth of the hearth where the pot is boiling, hams and sausages hanging from the joists, an abundance of vegetables. "(M. Préaud, Rodolphe Bresdin 1822-1885, Robinson Graveur, exhibition catalogue, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, 2000, p. 99).
