)The Flight into Egypt. (Pl. of The Life of the Virgin). About 1503. Woodcut. 211 x 296. Bartsch 89; Meder 201. Beautiful and brilliant proof on laid paper, from a print without text on the reverse (probably 16th c.), before the numerous breaks on the square line at the foot, with the break interrupting the line of Joseph's tunic above his left thigh. Remains of glue and mounting tabs at head on verso. Several visible holes in the subject (caused by old framing). Small loss at the left edge towards the top, affecting the palms of the tree. Rough restoration on verso, with filling of a small gap on the square line on the left, the latter retouched with ink. Horizontal drying fold in the middle. Watermark: arms (?).
Provenance: Maurice Rousseau (label on the reverse of the old frame).
