Paris around 1330/1350
Coronation of the Virgin Mary
Carved ivory. The recessed relief shows, overlaid with Gothic architecture, the Mother of God crowned by an angel next to the blessing Christ the King. An ivory of comparable composition from the 1st third of the 14th century is preserved in the Musée de Cluny (inv. no. Cl. 23542). The smooth back of our tablet is surrounded by a slightly raised rim and served to apply a thin layer of wax so that the ivory could be used as a writing tablet.
Bore with small breakout at top center. Only minor bumps. 9,5 x 5 cm.
