Bust.
Oil on canvas. (19)59. Approx. 65 x 50 cm. Signed and dated lower right. Numbered "8" in a circle on the verso of the canvas.
Massimo Campigli first came into contact with the cultural scene in Milan from 1909, which made a lasting impression on him and inspired him to paint. In addition to his later contacts from 1919 at the Café du Dôme in Paris, where he met Giorgio de Chirico, Gino Severini and Filippo de Pisis, among others, as well as the Cubists, he was particularly influenced by the art of the ancient Egyptians and Etruscans. Following the canon of forms of these ancient cultures, he created figures until the end of his life that were based on highly simplified archaic forms. The present female figure is a fine example of this reduced to the essential.
