Gabriele Münter Lot n° 533

Tall Ostrich. Oil on Durex paper. 1943. approx. 62.5 x 44.5 cm (sheet size). Monogrammed at bottom near center. The work is listed in the artist's 1943 workbook with the notation "Saturday 6. III. eve". Gabriele Münter and Johannes Eichner spend the war years in great material seclusion in Murnau. Flower still lifes, always one of Münter's favorite motifs, now become the dominant pictorial theme; now and then the painter exchanges a work for goods. The present still life, with its delicate contrast of broken red and green tones, is a good example of Münter's art of these years. Despite the compact form, the inclusion of the light paper in the composition creates a light, almost floating impression.
