Still life with peonies. Watercolor on cream Japan. (Circa 1930/1940). Approx. 22 x 29 cm. Signed lower right. Nolde's watercolors have an incredible effect, a filling and radiance that is difficult to achieve in this technique in particular. Around 1918 he began to explore the world of flowers and captured his love for this subject in numerous variations. Airily arranged blossoms in red and orange are made to glow by the light background. Nolde allows each blossom to have its own effect and avoids overlapping. The radiant power of his watercolours is also due to the reduction of forms. Thus, although the flowers are still recognizable as peonies, for Nolde always adhered to the basic representational form, what is really important here is the color, which delicately yet hauntingly defines this sheet.
