The Price of Love, ca. 1780
Folded fan, the silk sheet painted with three cartels. In the center, a gallant gathered in a wood exchanges words of love, unites their hearts, or hopes for a happy union thanks to the lottery of Love. On the right, a gallant is writing sweet nothings to the one he loves. On the left, a young woman welcomes a dove carrying a love letter around her neck.
Reverse: bouquet of flowers including roses.
Mounted in finely cut, engraved and gilded ivory* decorated with love trophies, doves and altars of love.
