Hand screen, 17th century
Large hand screen opening into a sunburst, presumably for liturgical use.
Vellum leaf painted with three concentric circles in gold, blue and gold.
Ivory frame*, the handle in carved bone.
H.t. 34,3 cm / D. 39 cm (small missing leaf, handle replaced)
NB: a very similar screen is described as "Flabellum in painted and gilded parchment, ivory handle, Venetian work, 17th century" by Henri-René d'Allemagne, "Les accessoires du costume et du mobilier depuis le XIIIe jusqu'au XIXe siècle", tome 3, Schemit libraire, 1928, pl. 300
A similar screen, identified as Italian and dated to the 12th century, is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (inv. 56,882). And another flabellum is in the collections of the Fan Museum in London (inv. LDFAN 1996 23).
