PROVENANCE Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris Collection Achille Peretti, Neuilly-sur-Seine André Masson Amazons, 1965 Often associated with the surrealist movement, André Masson (1896-1987) took different paths that led him to a singular artistic career. An illustrator, engraver, sculptor and writer, he was an influence on the American abstract expressionist movement when he lived in the United States. He is known for his automatic drawings, inspired by the automatic writing of André Breton. Mythology will be throughout his life an inexhaustible source of inspiration. The work Amazones belonged to the collection of Achille Peretti (1911-1983) that the Aguttes house had the pleasure of dispersing. Famous politician, great resistance fighter, mayor of Neuilly-sur-Seine for thirty-six years, made Compagnon de la Libération by General de Gaulle, president of the National Assembly, he dominated the French political landscape of the 20th century. This ink on paper bears witness to the good taste of this collector and the precision of the line shown by the artist who chose a mythological subject to portray Amazons between figuration and surrealist appearance.
