[EQUITATION]. LA BROUE (Salomon de). THE FRENCH CAVALERICE. Paris, Abel L'Angelier, 1602-08. Three parts bound in one volume in-folio, brown granite calf, spine ornamented, edges spotted in red (contemporary binding). (4) ff. including illustrated title, 177 pages - 174 pages (including title), (1) f. of table 105 pages (including title), (3) pages. Spine partly missing, corners and edges missing, title-frontispiece detached with minor tears, small paper loss in upper margin of ff. Aiii-iv, A to Aiv and B without damage to text, spotting and minor worm work without damage to text in inner margin of pages 15 to 43. SECOND EDITION, rare and much enlarged, the first to contain the TITLE engraved by C. de Mallery. It is composed of three parts, each with its own pagination and title. The second part is dated "1608". WITHOUT the rare 23-page supplement which is very often missing. The original edition of 1593 is, according to Mennessier, "rare" (2 known copies). It is the FIRST TREATY OF EQUITATION WRITTEN BY A FRENCH SCUER. It presents equine subjects and devotes large sections to equestrian events, including tournaments and processions. Other sections are devoted to bits, harnesses, caparison and other subjects, all of which are depicted in woodcut ILLUSTRATIONS in the text and on full pages. ¶ Mennessier de La Lance, II, 4.
