ENLUMINATION. Miniature on vellum, illuminated, from a 15th century Book of Hours, illustrating Psalm 114 of the Office of the Dead. 14,2 x 10,7 cm. Very slight wear and tear. Large full-page miniature, depicting a burial ceremony, which appears to be that of a child, the body in its shroud sewn on it. The text, (19 lines on the recto and verso) in Latin, concerns the office of the dead; it is Psalm 114 dedicated to this solemnity in the hours used in Paris. "Añ placebo Dilexi quoniam exaudiet Dominus vocem orationis meae / Quia inclinavit aurem suam mihi et in diebus meis invocabo te / Circumdederunt me dolores mortis pericula inferni invenerunt me [...]. Custodiens parvulos Dominus: humiliatus sum". I love the Lord, for he hears my voice and my supplications / For he has inclined his ear to me; and I will call upon him all my life / The bonds of death had surrounded me, and the anguish of the grave had seized me [...]]. Beautiful ornamentation composed of leaves, flowers (pansies, ranunculus, daisies, etc.), wild strawberries and a bird.
