MASTER OF BOUCICAUT AND WORKSHOP. The Mass of the Dead. Miniature on a leaf, from an illuminated Book of Hours, on vellum. Paris, circa 1410-1415, size 17.8x12.9. The miniature represents the beginning of the Office of the Dead, and more precisely the funeral scene, which is part of the traditional iconography of the Books of Hours. On the left, members of the clergy read prayers for the salvation of the soul of the deceased. Two candles are placed in front of the coffin, which is covered with a red mortuary sheet and marked with a white cross. To the right of the miniature, near the coffin, three mourners dressed in black come forward.
