In this play by Victorien Sardou and Émile Moreau, Réjane (see no. 156) plays the title role of Marshal Lefebvre, a former linen maid whose husband was elevated by Napoleon to the rank of Marshal of the Empire and Duke. Here she is given a dance lesson by the courtier Despréaux, played by Galipaux. This role brought Réjane fame. Like Sarah Bernhardt, she inspired Proust for his character of La Berma. The writer was friends with the actress' son, Jacques Porel. Réjane lodged Proust at her home at the end of her life.
