The satire of Catholicism in vogue at the time can be seen in this plate: "[it] incorporates a slight blasphemy [...] for the image of the night cabaret in celebration is composed like an Entry of Christ into Jerusalem, the painting by Gérôme (Musée de Vesoul) which was reproduced in Le Figaro Illustré in April 1890" (Richard Thomson, "Observations on the Themes of Toulouse-Lautrec's Prints", in Wittrock, vol. 1, pp. 27-28).
