François MEURET (1800-1887). Portrait of a man with a taupe frock coat. Beautiful and large rectangular miniature on ivory signed lower left. Height : 13 cm. Height : 13 cm. Width : 10 cm. Presented in a velvet frame with a brass frame chased with a frieze of hearts. First half of the 19th century. Provenance : Louis-Maxime ANSALONI, son of Amilcar ANSALONI, former chief engineer of the design office of Gustave Eiffel et Cnie. Biography and notes: painter in miniature of Louis-Philippe and the family of Orleans, this pupil of AUBRY exposes to the Salon from 1822 to 1852 and will form the last "great" European miniaturist Cécile VILLENEUVE (1824-1901) who remains active until 1897, time when already the miniature does not appear any more that an art of the past. One of the best miniaturists of his time, MEURET adopts the technique of crossed and split brushstrokes for the face. The clothes are painted in large flat tints of gouache gummed in the folds or letting appear the ivory in the lights. cf: "The golden age of the small portrait". Réunion des Musées Nationaux 1895.
