Bobby, presumed portrait of the artist's son, circa 1942
Oil on canvas, with an old label on the back "Atelier Derain n°414
35 x 45 cm
Provenance: given by Mrs Alice DERAIN, widow of the artist, to the current owner "André Derain is the Christopher Columbus of modern art".
André Derain was a pioneer: African art, Fauvism, Cubism with "his bathers", his role in the laboratory of the Demoiselles D'Avignon by Picasso was absolutely essential.
Of all this, he did not take advantage because he turned his back on his discoveries. Hence Gertrude Stein's rather pertinent formula.
