Oil/wood. Allegory of summer. The frontal portrait of a female figure, whose head is adorned with a wreath of ears of corn, looks directly at the viewer with her eyes, which are lighted with highlights. Her dark cloak has slipped down on one side, exposing parts of the light incarnate of her shoulder and breast. This stands out clearly against the neutral, dark background. Paulus Moreelse made frequent use of this type of depiction in his portraits of women. Moreelse was a pupil of Michiel van Mierevelt. After a trip to Italy he was influenced by Caravaggio's chiaroscuro painting. Min. ret., otherwise good condition. Netherlands, 17th century H x W approx. 51 x 39 cm, H x W ger. approx. 78 x 64 cm
