Carl Bertling was a German history, portrait and genre painter as well as illustrator of the Düsseldorf school. From 1852 he studied painting at the academy of arts in Düsseldorf. The billd "Hagar and Ishmael" was his first known commission, which he created under the direction of Wilhelm von Schadow. From 1862 to 1864 he worked on the monumental painting "Cain and Abel" with Eduard Bendemann. The painting still hangs in the stairwell of the Naumburg penitentiary. In 1879 Bertling moved to Dresden.
