A student at Saint-Cyr (Crimea, Sebastopol class of 1854-1856), he served in the 1st Zouave Regiment and the Foreign Regiment.
Second in command at the Saint Cyr school in 1885, he was then colonel of the 117th infantry regiment in 1888. He became a division general in 1894.
