29x29 cm, cross 68x33 cm The unusual depiction of the crucified Christ showing the internal parts of the body unites religious aspects of the Christ-man with new studies on human anatomy that were given great impetus in the 17th-18th centuries. Our depiction reminds us of the Sicilian Jesuit abbot Giulio Gaetano Zumbo (Syracuse 1656 - Paris 1701), a leading figure in 17th century ceroplastic art. The stylistic characterization of Christ dripping with blood and with an expression of painful suffering is in line with the Counter-Reformation doctus that influenced artistic production, especially in Spain and southern Italy, leading us to believe that the work is by a follower of Zumbo, active between Naples and Sicily.
