This fragment of the Gandhara frieze in schist, in low relief, depicts three episodes in the life of the Buddha. The Buddha is represented in three registers, surrounded by numerous disciples. The figures are inscribed in architectures.
Gandhara is a region located between Peshawar, the Swat Valley and Taxila in the northwest of Pakistan, conquered in 330 BC by Alexander the Great who introduced the Hellenistic style which had an important influence on the statuary art of this region for over seven centuries.
