Donatien Nonnotte was the favourite pupil of François Lemoyne (1688 - 1737), the king's first painter, and collaborated with him on many of his great paintings, including his ceiling for the Salon d'Hercule at the Château de Versailles and the decoration of the Chapelle de la Vierge at Saint-Sulpice. Nonnotte first made a name for himself as a history painter, but is now remembered mainly as a portrait painter, for which he entered the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1741. He settled in Lyon in 1754 and remained there until his death.
