Kankanaï house door with a figure, Philippines
H. 26 ¾ in
The mountain dwelling from which this rare 19th-century Kankanaï door comes is from a small village overlooking the rice paddies in tiers. The thickness of the door was justified by the raids that existed between villages at the time.
A comparable door from the former Barbier-Mueller collection can be seen at the Musée du Quai Branly, reproduced in the book Philippines, Archipel des Echanges p. 173.
The figure in high relief shows a woman with bent legs whose arm gestures are quite elaborate and who has numerous tattoos on her arms, breasts and navel, as in the figure on p. 172 of the same book.
There is a space between the panel and the neck in the round which allowed the door to be pulled, like a handle. The patina of the door here is a deep black.
