Dan mask with split eyes, "masque chanteur", Ivory Coast
H. 11 ¾ in
Provenance:
- European Collection
This beautiful brown-black hardwood mask probably represents a woman. Himmelheber classifies it as tankagle which includes both male and female genders. The beadwork and bells surrounding the lower face may define it as a singing mask.
This nicely sized amusement mask has a nice shape with a rounded forehead, prominent cheekbones, a straight nose and a well-defined mouth. Its signs of femininity can be seen in the central scarification on the forehead, a mark of beauty, and the slit eyes.
Beautiful and old black-brown lacquered patina.
