CIHONGO TSHOKWE MASK, Angola Hardwood with brown patina, black pigments. H. 21.5 cm Male Cihongo face, with slit coffee bean eyes inscribed in deep sockets. The straight, pinched nose surmounts a stretched mouth, open to blunt teeth. Scarifications mark the temples and cheeks. A wide palette in a horizontal plateau indicates a beard under the face, while a short headdress is depicted on top of the head. Peripheral holes are provided for attachment. Cihongo masks represent a male spirit, associated with the idea of power as much as wealth, whose role is to bring order and prosperity to the village.
