In 1915, he became a sergeant and obtained his military pilot's licence. At the end of his 37th sortie in 1918, Coppens came under heavy machine-gun fire while parachuting into Allied territory, resulting in the amputation of his left leg. Despite this, his bravery and patriotism led him to continue his military career, becoming Commander of the Military Aeronautics and Inspector of Air Defence from 1934 to 1940.
