It was in 1785 that Houdon executed the portrait of George Washington at Mount Vernon. This terracotta bust, still preserved in the Mount Vernon Museum, was to be used for a marble statue, dated 1788, which was erected at the Capitol in Richemond, Virginia. Houdon brought back from his stay in America two plaster casts and the mould of the Mount Vernon bust. Various versions are known, in plaster, terracotta or bronze, representing him bare-chested, in uniform or draped in the antique style.
