FER (Nicolas de): Les Forces de l'Europe, ou Descriptions des principales villes avec leurs fortifications Paris, chez l'auteur, s. d. (c. 1700); seven volumes in 4° oblong, brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt designs, boards decorated with gilt fillets and corner fleurons. Binding of the time. Famous atlas by Nicolas de Fer, ordinary geographer of the King and Children of France. It was first published in eight issues, from 1690 to 1695. A copy combining maps from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd editions. ALL PLATES ARE ENHANCED IN COLOUR. The numbering of the plates follows the tomination; the set is thus complete up to volume VII, including the titles and introductory ff, with the exception of pl. 112. - Volume I: 2 blank ff, title, frontispiece, introduction, f. of table r°v°, 24 plates of which the 22nd is folding. - Volume II: title, introduction (coloured plate), plates 27 to 51. Pl. 33 has a tear and a small old brown stain. - Volume III: title, introductory f., pl. 54 to 69. - Volume IV: title, introductory f., pl. 72 to 92. - Volume V: title, no introductory f., pl. 94 to 113 (pl. 112 missing). - Volume VI: title, no introductory folio, pl. 115 to 137 of which pl. 130 is folding. - Volume VII: title, no introductory folio, pl. 139 to 163. In this volume, there are views of Copenhagen (pl. 144), Constantinople (pl. 149), Malta (pl. 151 and 152), Greece (pl. 153 to 156), Batavia (pl. 157), Tripoli (pl. 158), Algiers (pl. 159), Quebec (pl. 160), Panama (pl. 161), Havana (pl. 162), Cartagena (pl. 163).
