This head is a study for the monumental Athlete made by Alfred Auguste Janniot for the Lescure Stadium in Bordeaux. The sculptor, a pupil of Bourdelle, produced numerous monumental works, including the reliefs for the south façade of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris for the 1931 International Exhibition.
