This statuette is based on the monumental ancient marble model of the Farnese Hercules kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (n°inv. 6001). The latter, discovered in the Baths of Caracalla, has enjoyed great fame since the second half of the 16th century when it was mentioned by Aldrovandi in the Farnese Palace in Rome.
