Herrengrund Cup with handles
in gilded copper, multi-lobed, with embossed decorations of stylized scallops and heart-shaped leaves. It is engraved on the reverse with a moving testimony in German: "Die Ankunft mein ward eisenhart, im Bergwerk musst ich graben stark. Da der Man mich nicht mehr brauchen kunnt, warf man mir in den Zement Grund. Das wasser zu kopf mich mir tempiriert, bin worden eine Schale mit Gold geziert".
"My arrival was hard as iron, in the mine I have to dig hard. Since I was no longer needed, I was thrown on the cement floor. The water on my head gave me relief, this bowl was adorned with gold."
Hungary, Herrengrund, first half of the 18th century.
Height 3.8 cm. Diam. 15.9 cm.
Our bowl is another reminder of the supposed supernatural powers of water from the Herrengrund mining region.
