NGHIEM TOAN and RICAUD (Louis) (translated by), Les trois Royaumes,
Saigon, SEI 1960-1963, 3 volumes in 4 in-8, XLIX-1426-(4) pp, illustrations and maps, paperback, illustrated covers.
Chapters I to XLV (all published). The San kouo tche yen yi, or Novel of the Three Kingdoms, which has as its subject the events of the third century A.D., is the undisputed masterpiece of the Eul-che-sseu che, or Twenty-four Stories, also known as Dynastic Stories, because as a rule each one is devoted to one dynasty and was written by the care of the next dynasty. It is an epic novel-flow, "that every Chinese has read, reads and will read as long as China lasts" (Maspero), and whose episodes are familiar to the illiterate themselves. Small smears without gravitas.
